Layer

Each instruction in a Dockerfile (mostly RUN, COPY, and ADD) produces a new layer — a diff of the filesystem. Layers are content-addressed and cached, so if nothing upstream of an instruction changed, Docker reuses the existing layer instead of rebuilding it. This is why instruction order in a Dockerfile matters for build speed.
