Namespaces (kernel)

Kernel namespaces (PID, network, mount, UTS, IPC, user) isolate what a process can see — its own process tree, its own network interfaces, its own filesystem mounts. Combined with cgroups, namespaces are the foundation containers are built on, well before Docker existed.
