Type an image reference and this fetches its manifest, config, and build history straight from the registry -- Docker Hub by default, or name another major public registry (ghcr.io/..., Quay, GCR, ECR Public, Artifact Registry). Nothing is downloaded to your machine; the lookup happens on the server, against public images only.
